Everyone I Love Deserves a Holiday

Hey y'all,

What the hell.  It's snowing.  That sucks.  But, let's not all be ones to complain about the weather.  This is Canada after all.  I'll just take the opportunity to spin some really happy songs to combat the sinking.

We come to this first song, it sounds, almost as if stumbling upon a kitchen party or a campfire singalong.  We hear someone count the band in and from the first leak of sound there is that undeniably fun jangle.  The lazy tambourine, the chorus vocals, a perfectly mixed lead guitar in the background, and and (they are, after all a stoner band) just enough distortion.  "Everyone I love deserves a holiday in the sun!" Just like us, they know that they probably won't get it, but they'll sing it anyways because what else is there to do?

Not a lot of things make me feel more at home and carefree than sub par CBC shows.  My family watches one religiously every Sunday night: Heartland.  It's theme song is by Jenn Grant.  So is this song.  I was encouraged to acquire her album by Vish and his interracial morning show.  I was surprised that it wasn't the "freak-folk" album I was expecting.  Take this song for example.  We've got horns, country jangle, the definite sound of boots stomping in the background.  All this not to mention Jenn's fantastically sexy and coy vocals.  Get me good! (Also, name the city the video is shot in!)

Keeping it Canadian, because who can really understand our plight of Snow in April better than Gord Downie.  The Poet Laureate of Canadian tuneage.  The first lyrical offering after the introduction of pumping acoustic guitars and jabbing leads: "I'd rather dress a wolf, she said...we fucked on the ferry, I thought the wolf was dead."  Wow.  Gord, I know you're old.  But you're still cool man.  For sure.  Also, the wavering in his vocals at times sounds oriental which gives the songs a cool edge.  The sound of something that maybe shouldn't be.  Also, Julie Dioron does some dope backing vocals and maraca playing on this tune.

This song needs no explanation...except to get to it.  Can't find it save for on myspace.  The song I most recommend for your pleasure is Vittoria.  You can read more about the project here.

Last tune reminds me of places beyond night.  Displaced moments of insomnia.  Caught in what can't be, bust must be called a "lack of".  'I'm wide awake and the world is ending.'  Days too good to kill with an end.  Nights too good to waste on a promise of again. Wolf Parade - Grey Estates.

Go make a snowball or sumthin'
