I used to read this children's chapter book series called The Boxcar Children. The series revolved around the crazy Alden kids who were orphaned and lived in a Boxcar. They would solve crimes and get into pickles all from their home the Boxcar. I have a theory that its largely because of this series that I've had a romanticized vision of the rails. Then I got older and saw the Woody Guthrie biopic "Bound for Glory" and started listening to Dylan. As a result I've always yearned to travel and see new places. Even though I'm not one of those dudes with the "eat sleep travel" shirts you see walking around campus I do get dreamy eyed thinking about adventures on the open road.
Here are some travellin' songs:
This tune was originally written and recorded by Bob Dylan. It was released on the "No Direction Home" soundtrack/bootleg series disc. From the moment I heard this tune it's haunted me. When it was covered by Antony and Bryce Dessner for the impecable compilation "Dark Was the Night" I was really speechless.
This tune is by a band that is admittedly hit and miss for me: Bright Eyes. I love this tune, and this whole album really. He's a great writer and this tune rolls along. It's going somewhere I guess....
I like Jenny Lewis a lot
This final tune is by Matt Mays from Dartmouth. It's for my buddy Mark whose headed out that way today back to School in Halifax. I'm hoping to get a chance to go and visit him out there this semester and if I do, we'll be having some Keith's and listening to this tune for sure. Stompin' boots and all.
Get to where you're going safe!
Cheers, Rob J
