Word.
These next few trains, planes and automobiles songs have nothing to do with actual travelling. Sorry. They're more a smorgasbord of cassette mixtapes from driving to Calgary as a kid (some of my favourite memories ever, although the prairies are tres boring ), looking out the window on the way to North Bay (to visit my favourite french boy) and blocking out Transformers on the way to track meets (yup). Music is essential for travelling! Here goes:
This first one has shaky video, but I think it's the best version. Also search for the one where Springsteen is on Elvis Costello's show. Somehow the Boss' voice hasn't aged... he's the man.
The next one is Ian Hunter. He's the dude that sings "Cleveland Rocks" and is also in Mott the Hoople.
Track three. Yes.
Last but not least, Neil Young -- definitely in my top five artists ever. I've been reading his Illustrated History and Discography since Christmas and it's hard to put down. Man, his life is depressing, but each story is so captivating. He and Ronnie Van Zant from Lynyrd Skynyrd scrapped for awhile about Young's response to Sweet Home Alabama. Apparently it's listed as one of the biggest celebrity feuds ever. Skynyrd was pretty cheesed about a Canadian dude calling out the southern states... "Southern Man, better keep your head/ Don't forget/ what your Good book said/ Southern change/ gonna come at last/Now your crosses/ are burning fast." Bold. Anyways, I always thought the two hated each others guts. Turns out that even though Van Zant fired back with Sweet Home Alabama, he was buried in the same Neil Young t-shirt he wore on stage for concerts. I thought about posting "Alabama," which has a similar message, but this one reminds me more of travelling.
Hey! I guess Walk On is kind of travel-associated. Good coincidence.
Honourable mentions: anything Motown, the National's High Violet album (props to Nixon for throwing them in the best of 2010), the Pogues, the Lion King soundtrack and the RAC remix of Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Oh! Also Led Zeppelin. Particularly Zeppelin IV. And A Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay.
Okay now I am done. Happy New Year and travel safely back to school/wherever you're headed.
