So I'm sitting in the Porter Lounge about to fly home to Thunder Bay. I haven't been home for eight months, after flying out immediately after my last exam at Lakehead. Having finished my exams, writing two yesterday to cap it off, I'm feeling quite free and optimistic right now. However, the past week and a half were less than ideal, I was sick enough that I didn't run and I had five exams to write. I definitely need to stop cramming for exams if I ever want to make it through my undergrad. These are the songs that got me through the exam period, the songs that told me "hey, it's gonna be alright man, life goes on".
Gold Soundz - Pavement
Ha, even with a Christmas theme in the music video, that's a good coincidence. This song is tied to some great memories for me, and I know that's why it makes me feel that it really doesn't matter if I don't know all the answers to my exams. I remember seeing these guys kill it at Osheaga this summer, right after I came back from World Juniors, and I don't think I'll ever be down once this tune starts playing.
El Scorcho - Weezer
Hearing Rivers Cuomo sing about not having the confidence go to talk to a cute girl during his self-imposed exile after the Blue Album blew up definitely chills me out. If that rockstar still worries about the same shit that I do, all the money and education in the world doesn't really matter, right? Either way, it's not like my exams went poorly, but damn, it wasn't enjoyable spending all that time in the library half-sick. Christmas is an expensive month, and having to beg my parents for money to buy them presents doesn't necessarily imbue me with the spirit of giving, since it's their money paying for the gifts. Damn...I need a job. Also, like the first track, this song brings back the awesome memory of the end of (this past) summer, at the Pancake Kegger in Ottawa where Sheep Man (http://www.myspace.com/sheepmanband) - formerly known as the Koosh Dudes - rocked the party covering this song and everyone was going crazy.
So yeah, those are my two contributions to our first mixtape, hope y'all enjoy 'em, happy holidays.
Andrew
