The Eighties: Volume I.

Hi.

Round two of this week's mixtape posts comin' atcha! A 1980s and pseudo-80s-inspired slew of songs has been brewing in my brain for awhile and I'm feelin' a little mixtape this morning. This seems like a fitting week to post 'em up.

On Tuesday Cody, Rob, Nixon and I hung out in DST's basement and had the pleasure of listening to a bit of his massive record collection. It was awesome.

I think the highlight for me -- aside from wicked tunes -- was listening to stories/memories about buying records and listening with buddies. Gone are the days of running home from the record store with a new album. At least it seems like it. Even HMV sits like a bump on a log in the CD department. Since the internet has made everything under the sun available as torrents, people don't really buy or exchange music anymore, which is too bad because I feel like our generation is missing out on some funny experiences.... like finding Bowie's "Scary Monsters" on the side of the road... or thinking that Haircut 100 is a punk band. Here is their album cover:

Discovering music is a hell of a lot less social than it used to be....

... BOOYAKASHA mixtapers. I guess this is the next best thing?

Things to note before you listen today:

- 80s fashion is back in style (k, maybe not cable sweaters tucked into pants) but lookie here
- There will be lots of drum kitting and synthesizing.
- Men at Work should not be confused with Men Without Hats (y'know that Safety Dance song? yeah).
- Frank Zappa is crazy and is terrible/amazing at naming children. Amazing for us, awful for a kid named Diva Muffin. I don't know his music well enough to post songs.... but in the meantime: go here
- There's been a surge in New Wave/post-punk/80s influenced songs these days, like these two:
**realization after finishing this mixtape: really should've grouped this into >3 different posts.

Bizarre Love Triangle-esque:

... so maybe a little more electronic than the 80s as a whole. The next is an attempt at rebounding from synthesizers to songs with real instruments.

Thought about posting Interpol or the Futureheads too... check them out. And now some actual songs from the 80s, the whole damn point of this post.

The Talking Heads are awesome. Definitely in my top 5 bands ever. The brains behind the operation, David Byrne, is one of the ultimate weirdos. He's also literally the brains since he's touted as a musical genius and one of the most creative and influential artists in recent history. He was born in the UK and moved to the US but never changed citizenship, spent a bit of time in Hamilton as a kid (Canada, cool) is a leftie but plays right-handed guitar, resembles a pigeon on stage (dead give away in the first video I'm posting), founded a world music record label, rides a bike instead of driving and has designed bike racks in the shapes of guitars and money signs for the city of New York. He also writes a column on biking for the New York Times. If you ever meet him, axe him how much he likes bikes. Do it.

I LOVE this song:

And now for the rest. Hope you like them. Props to Mr. Dan MacD again for introducing us to so much music as kids, otherwise I would've been 0 to -8 years old around the time these came out.  Maybe I was exposed to eighties bands in the womb, but listening would be a) muffled and b) hard to remember, soooo yep.

More sometime soon, this post is getting ridiculous.

Love, Tara
